Seplaa Group at GAIL UK Summit

London I Dr. Ammara Farooq Malik & Amal Farooq Malik

The Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers (GAIL) organized their Annual Summit at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) in April 2024.

Seplaa Group CEO Dr. Ammara Farooq Malik is the Chair of the Asia Pacific Board of GAIL and Seplaa Young Leaders Club Advisor Amal Farooq Malik, is one of the youngest Members of GAIL.

Dr. Ammara Farooq Malik:

The two and a half days with the Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers (GAIL ) community in London attending the Annual Summit 2024 at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) was nothing short of exhilarating and exciting with several new ideas and concepts floated which many speakers reassured was confusing but that it was certainly, not out of the ordinary! It was particularly interesting to co-moderate the session on ‘Latin America and Asia Pacific: Building a Regional Impact Network_ Case Studies in Cross Border Collaborations’ with my co-moderator Paola Foncesca and hear about the work that we can replicate in each region with respect to impact law.

Several regulators in regional jurisdictions are also still not able to wrap theirs heads around how ESG metrics are to be incorporated within corporate structures and impact investing is still a new finance model in many parts of Asia Pacific.

In Pakistan, this poses as a great opportunity to introduce this approach and concept to the bench, bar and academia.

It was wonderful to meet many new and old friends, particularly Constanza Connolly, Keya Advani, Sarah Dobson James, Luke Fletcher, Sung-Hyui Park, Oliver Hunt, Ranajoy Basu, Raluca Radu, Gabriel de Almeida, Vivien Teu, Louise Williams, Michael Ryland, Jon Cheung, Brian W Tang, Sarah Ellington, Paola Fonseca, Magdalena Enei, Jimena Aguilar Lizano, NanaAma Botchway, Margaret Musondo Mwape, Emiliano Giovine, Dan Fuochi, Tze-wei Ng, Sotaro Hotta, Takahisa Watanabe, Amy Bergstraesser, Roberto Randazzo, Claire Donse, Elizabeth Lange, Alessia Gianoncelli, Patrick Miller, Zvia Schoenberg, Philomena Cleobury, Francesco Zatelli, Bryony Widdup, Telha Arshad, Safia Gulamani, CPA, CA, and many more.

Impact Law, Legal Innovation & AI are an area where I see potential for collaborations between the Seplaa Group Inc., Seplaa Global Impact Network (SGIN) and the GAIL members.  At the Seplaa Group Inc. we are geared towards solid partnerships, collaborations and mutual growth.

Amal Farooq Malik:

Over the last two days, I attended the Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers (GAIL) Annual Summit at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as a GAIL member. I was able to hear a number of insightful panel discussions led by excellent speakers, which opened up a new world of impact law for me. It was really inspiring to be able to speak to legal experts with years of experience in the legal field, including Vivien Teu, Brian W Tang, Paola Fonseca, Ranajoy Basu, Luke Fletcher, Sung-Hyui Park, NanaAma Botchway, Jon Cheung, Magdalena Enei, Tze-wei Ng , Michael Ryland and Sotaro Hotta.

A session that particularly sparked my interest was a Roundtable Session on Evolving Approaches to ESG, Pro Bono and Impact Law. Claire Donse (DLA Piper) spoke about the concept of ‘low-bono’, as a part of the solutions to tensions between pro bono and impact law. The session allowed me to reflect on the intersections between pro bono work and impact law, and consider how firms can move towards incorporating impact into their practices beyond just doing pro-bono work.

After Day 1 of the Summit, I had the pleasure of meeting Raluca Radu and Gabriel de Almeida (Legal Innovation for Sustainable Investments (LISI)) at the Members Networking Reception hosted by Hogan Lovells. I’m really looking forward to learning more about legal innovation through impact tools created under LISI from them!

I was also able to meet Jimena Aguilar Lizano, another young member of GAIL, and we discussed the similarities in lawyers’ attitudes towards impact law in Pakistan and Costa Rica. As the two youngest members of GAIL, it was very exciting to be able to learn from the Summit and then exchange ideas. It is crucial that our generation has access to this expert knowledge, to help the growth of impact law in the Global South.

Most importantly, thank you to Keya Advani, Sarah Dobson James and Louise Williams for making this event happen, and thank you to my mother, Dr. Ammara Farooq Malik, for always guiding me towards exciting opportunities and encouraging me to take on new challenges!
